It was sometime in 1956 when Bishop Gerard Mongeau, OMI (the first Prelate Ordinary of Cotabato) , invited the Passionists to work with him in his rapidly expanding Prelature. However, negotiations between the Oblates and the Passionists took a little bit longer. Thus, it was not until January 21, 1958 that the first Passionists Fathers, namely, Fr. Quentin Olwell, CP and Fr. Anthony Maloney, CP set foot in Cotabato.
A couple of weeks later, in February of that same year, seven more Passionists arrived, namely, Fr. Leonard Amrhein, CP, Fr. Reginald Arliss, CP, Fr. Jerome Does, CP, Fr. Crispin Lynch, CP, Fr. Lawrence Mullin, CP, Fr. Paschal Smith, CP and Fr. Hilarion Walters, CP.
These nine trailblazers, some of whom were veteran missionaries of China, were truly the pioneers of the Passionist Mission in the Philippines. Soon after, they took up their stations in Norala, Banga, Marbel, Lagao, Dadiangas, and Glan. And much later, Tupi and Kiamba. The rest is history…

Gospel Reflection (Luke 18: 35-43)
Jesus asked the blind man: what do you want me to do for you?
This is also the very question Jesus poses to us as we begin our gathering. What do we want Jesus to do for our Configuration: in the areas of Formation, Personnel and Finance? What do we want him to do for our Solidarity, so that our Passionist life shall be vibrant and our mission relevant?
In reply, the blind man said: Please, let me see!
Yes, that’s exactly what we desire: we want to see.
To see what I have, to see what you have and to see what we have in common. To see what I can, what you can and what we can when we are one.
But we want to see not the way I see, not the way you see nor the way we see. But to see the way Jesus wants us to see, to see with the eyes of faith, of hope and of love; with eyes totally touched by Jesus.
We want to see our solidarity with the eyes of Jesus. We want to see our Passionist life with the love of Jesus. We want to see our mission with the heart of Jesus.
What Jesus did to the blind man was really, really good: good for the blind man himself. That is why he followed Jesus and gave glory to God. It was also good for the people who saw the miracle. That is why they gave praise to God.
What Jesus will do to our Configuration will really be good for our respective entities. Our Passionist life will surely grow. It will also be good for the people we serve. God’s people will experience the power of the Passionist mission.
The blind man pleaded with Jesus: Please, let me see. I repeat, the blind man said: Please. This is the spirit of our gathering. Begging! Surrendering! And waiting! – for God’s mercy. As we share, we beg Jesus to make us see. As we plan, we surrender to the guidance Jesus. As we make decisions, we await His wise disposition.
May St Paul of the Cross, our Father and Founder, be our companion in our journey toward greater solidarity for life and mission.
